Western Michigan University has promoted Remzi Seker to senior vice president for research and innovation, four years after he joined the institution.
Seker joined WMU as vice president for research and innovation in June 2022, after spending the previous nine years at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
He served as the latter university’s vice president for research and doctoral programmes from March 2022 and as associate provost for research from October 2018 to March 2022.
Western Michigan University filed 26 new first-stage patent applications and 13 second-stage applications in fiscal year 2025, the highest number of new filings in the university’s history, and an increase of 20 over the previous year.
The university’s strengths lie particularly in student-led endeavours, with 14 of the applications coming through a collaboration with the Richmond Institute for Design and Innovation’s Venture Studio.
