Algeria has unveiled a national register of university spinouts, becoming the first nation to follow in the footsteps of the UK, which built the world’s first such tool in June last year.

The Digital Register of University Subsidiaries formally records and monitors spinouts emerging from universities, research centres, university centres, and schools. A total of 388 spinouts have been mapped to date.

Its stated goal is to bolster governance, visibility, and long-term sustainability of academic entrepreneurship.

Kamel Baddari, Algeria’s minister of higher education and scientific research, unveiled the platform as one of four to drive forward the country’s digital transformation and ambitions for the innovation ecosystem.

A second platform, University Network of Incubators and Entrepreneurship Development Centres, connects students with university incubators and entrepreneurship development centres.

The Digital Psychological Counselling Platform offers psychological follow-up and support for resident and non-resident students, while the Digital Platform for Booking Meals in University Restaurants aims to streamline operations and reduce waste in university hospitality services.

Baddari said in his speech announcing the platforms that they will form part of “the cornerstone of the transition toward a fourth-generation university that transforms students’ ideas into projects and projects into enterprises with economic and social impact.”
