The University of Oxford has appointed Prof Constantin Coussios as its new pro vice chancellor for innovation, effective at the end of this month.
Coussios has been a fixture at Oxford since 2004, initially joining as the first academic appointment in biomedical engineering.
He rose through the ranks to become the inaugural chair in biomedical engineering in 2011 and currently leads the Podium Institute for Sports Medicine and Technology as founding director.
Crucially, he has a proven track record of driving university spinouts to commercial success, most notably through OrganOx.
Founded in 2008, OrganOx developed technology to extend the viability of liver transplants using normothermic perfusion. The company was acquired by medical equipment manufacturer Terumo for $1.5 billion last year, marking the university’s largest spinout exit to date.
“For the past twenty‑two years I have felt privileged to be part of Oxford, one of the ecosystems with the greatest concentration of creative energy in the world.
“I am committed to working to the best of my abilities with all stakeholders to preserve, evolve and enhance it, so that it can continue to serve as a springboard for the next generation of Oxonian innovators, across town and gown.”

Coussios succeeds Diarmuid O’Brien, who had been pro vice chancellor for innovation from March 2024 to September 2025. O’Brien is now the CEO of the newly established innovation funding agency Research Ireland.
