Langis Roy

Lakehead University, a public institution in Ontario in Canada, has appointed Langis Roy as vice president of research and innovation.

Roy took on his new role yesterday, joining from Ontario Tech University, where he was a professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering.

He joined Ontario Tech University in July 2015 and also served as dean of graduate and postdoctoral studies from 2015 to 2021. He was the deputy provost from 2020 to 2023.

At Lakehead University, Roy will devise a new strategic research plan, oversee the institution’s research and economic development portfolio, support industry engagement, and collaborate with faculty on securing research funding.

Roy says he sees particular opportunities in how AI can accelerate the pace of discovery and democratise entrepreneurship.

“Lakehead is clearly ahead of the curve in terms of sustainability mindset and community engagement, and has unique synergies in its STEM Hub and interdisciplinary programming across central and northwestern Ontario.

“I look forward to joining this dynamic institution and contributing to Lakehead’s upward trajectory.”

Langis Roy owns three patents in radio-frequency system-on-package designs and has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles. His most recent research has focused on AI-assisted design and control.

He co-leads the France-Canada Generative Reconfigurable Adaptive Communications Electronics (GRACE) consortium. He has also held visiting appointments in France and Finland, and was involved in the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network.

“There is a strong history of research and innovation at Lakehead. Although Lakehead is a primarily undergraduate university, the impact and importance of research happening across the university places us among the top research-intensive universities in the country.

“I look forward to supporting Dr Roy as we continue to build on this incredible momentum.”
