The University of Newcastle has promoted Prof Craig Simmons to deputy vice chancellor of research and innovation, after four years of serving as pro vice chancellor of the College of Engineering, Science and Environment.
In his new role, Simmons will lead the research and innovation portfolio. He is tasked, in particular, with bolstering performance, strengthening industry and global partnerships, and driving impact.
Since April 2024, Simmons has also been the chief scientist of South Australia, advising the state premier, the minister for industry, innovation and science, and the cabinet, on matters of science and research, technology and innovation.
His research focuses on groundwater systems, where his expertise has been sought by the United Nations and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Simmons was previously pro vice chancellor for research at Flinders University, foundation director of the ARC National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, and an executive director at the Australian Research Council.
