Innovate Calgary CEO John Wilson retires

Innovate Calgary, the commercialisation arm of the University of Calgary, has a new interim president and chief executive officer following the retirement of John Wilson .

Shawn Baxter , who became the associate vice president for strategy, enterprise and commercial at the University of Calgary in December, has taken on leadership of Innovate Calgary.

Baxter previously spent 18 years working for oil and gas company Shell, most latterly as asset operational excellence manager, LNG Canada Asset, from February 2021 to April 2025.

Wilson was Innovate Calgary’s president and CEO from January 2019 until this month, having first joined the organisation as director of IP management in July 2016.

He was previously the director of innovation at Brock University for five years, and worked for Oxford University Innovation from April 2008 to April 2011.

In an interview published by Innovate Calgary, Wilson stated he was likely to “remain involved with a small number of organisations in the innovation space”.
