The WP Carey Foundation, a US education-focused foundation, has donated $50 million to the Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School to support the creation of more IP-backed startups.

The gift brings the foundation’s total commitment to the university to $125 million. An earlier donation in 2006 had established the Carey Business School.

The $50 million gift will be used to provide startup funding and strengthen connections between MBA students, the university’s commercialisation office, Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, and the Pava Marie LaPere Center for Entrepreneurship.

“We are deeply honoured by the WP Carey Foundation’s faith in Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and its ongoing support of the Baltimore area. Together, we will continue to position Carey Business School as the premier school in the business of health, offering unique value for students.”

Alex Triantis, dean of the Carey Business School

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures has formed more than 130 spinouts since 2014, and these companies have thus far raised more than $4.8 billion in venture capital funding.
