Guelph promotes Mazyar Fallah to VP for research and innovation

Mazyar Fallah

The University of Guelph is appointing Mazyar Fallah, currently the dean of the College of Biological Science, as vice president for research and innovation, effective 25 May.

Fallah has been with the Canadian institution since January 2021, when he joined after 16 years with York University. There, he had most recently been the associate dean for research and innovation in the Faculty of Health for five and a half years.

The University of Guelph considers the College of Biological Science one of its most research-intensive colleges, and noted Fallah’s contribution to strengthening its impact and its standing in the most recent QS ranking.

As a researcher, Fallah also secured millions in competitive neuroscience funding.

“I am deeply honoured to impart the bold vision and strength of the University’s research and innovation strategy to the world. At this competitive juncture, our focus remains on research excellence and impact, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding partnerships and ensuring faculty and staff are supported in their success.”

Fallah succeeds Shayan Sharif, who has served as interim associate vice-president for research (agri-food partnership) and as interim vice-president for research and innovation since October 2023.

Sharif will now become the distinguished chair in agri-food biosecurity and will re-assume his administrative responsibilities at the Ontario Veterinary College. He will also act as adviser to the president on institutional strategic partnerships.

An interim dean for the College of Biological Science is due to be announced in the coming weeks, when the university will also launch its search for a permanent successor to Fallah.
