Ohio State puts Sanjay Krishna in charge of innovation

Sanjay Krishna

The Ohio State University (OSU) has appointed Prof Sanjay Krishna as senior associate vice president for innovation and strategic ventures, just over a year after recognising him as the 2025 Innovator of the Year.

Krishna has been with OSU since 2017 and is the George R. Smith Professor of Engineering in the College of Engineering. He previously spent 16 years with the University of New Mexico.

His research focuses on infrared detector technology, and he has successfully commercialised technologies into commercial and defence applications.

OSU has spent the past year evaluating its innovation activities and is in the process of reorganising and expanding its offering in this area.

Among the forthcoming changes is the unification of OSU’s licensing teams, currently split across two offices – one is specifically aimed at health sciences. Translation and venture development will be a core offering of the combined group.

OSU will also bolster support for translational funding, spinout formation, and early-stage company development in recognition that market readiness goes beyond patenting.

John Horack, vice president for research, says: “Sanjay brings a proven track record as an innovator and leader, and I’m confident that, together with our outstanding team, he will help accelerate the impact of our research and position Ohio State at the forefront of innovation.”

Krishna will step into his new role on 1 July.
