The University of Sydney is planning to raise a large investment fund for its spinouts, according to multiple local media reports.
The university is said to project capital requirements of more than A$200 million for its spinouts in the coming years, indicating how large the new fund could become.
The institution has invited potential partners to discuss the creation of the new fund, which could also take the form of a co-investment platform.
The University of Sydney already operates the A$25 million Pre-Seed Launch Fund, which has been investing since April last year. The early-stage vehicle typically invests A$500,000 as equity or a SAFE note in spinouts and startups launched by staff, students, and recent alumni.
Since 2015, the university has also been a member of Uniseed, an investment firm backed by nine Australian universities and CSIRO. You can learn more about the history of Uniseed in our podcast.
